As a proud parent, you spend countless hours picking out such wonderful, safe, and durable products for your son or daughter. Chances are you also put a lot of thought into the purchase of her toy box, too. Since she's going to have toys, why not have a place to put them? And as you came to find, toy boxes are not just plain and simple anymore. Maybe you picked out a hand painted work of art or one with a specific theme or color to match her room. So now that you have this functional storage solution that also looks spectacular, how on earth do you get your little angel to put her toys INSIDE?
As early as one year of age, sometimes earlier, children have the ability to put their toys away. Yes, they do! To make this happen and teach your little one how to do this, it is important that you as the parent make the activity of "cleaning up" fun and creative! You have to draw your child's attention towards what you want her to learn. Even though each child is different and you have to find what attracts your own child, if you follow these simple tips with your own added twist, your son or daughter will be putting the toys away within a week! Though your main objective is to utilize your kid's toy storage, it is best to start this activity without the toy box. Sounds crazy, but a large toy box can be intimidating for a small child and also hard for her to reach inside. Find a small empty bin or basket to use first. Once she gets the hang of putting Girl / Baby boy toys away, you can then move up to her whatever you use for toy storage. First, put all her other toys away so she will not be distracted because you need her full attention for as long as she will allow. And this may be only five minutes. Sit on the floor with her so you are at her level. Find one or two of her favorite toys. Place each toy one at a time into the basket. As you are demonstrating this to her, recite or sing a simple phrase, such as "put toys away" or "toys away" or "toys inside" whatever words you want her to associate with this activity as long as they are simple. Singing is a wonderful tool for children and creating a song such as "toys away... toys away... time to put the toys away... that's all for our toys today!" can help make the activity of "cleaning up" encouraging and fun! As she watches you put the toy into the basket several times in a row, notice if she becomes interested in the toys whereabouts. Have her look inside the basket to show her the toy did not disappear, it just has been moved. Most children will try to reach for the toy. When she does this, say "pick up toy" or "take toy out." These two actions, taking the toy out and then putting the toy back in will help her understand what is expected of her when she is done with her toys. Repeat this "putting toy in" and "taking toy out" routine several times throughout each day and before you know it your little angel will be eager to put her toys away when asked! Though you must not expect her to grasp this idea at the first try, or the second try, it is vital to be consistent and patient with your little one, as with all things we teach them. Open your kid's toy box to a whole new world of teaching organization!
